I haven't seen anybody use a radar detector in years.
I just checked on the Valentine One which apparently hasn't changed anything since it's inception. That thing still looks straight out of the 70's.
lol that's like saying cars haven't changed much since then because they still have tires and engines haha

Its still the best RD out there imo.
If you don't mind the inside of your car looking like a RadioShack.
I'm sure cassette tapes still work too. There are massive changes to tires and engines since the 70's btw.
They haven't even changed their ad in 25 years. Still got that middle aged balding dude with the tie on their website. That guy is probably pushing 70 now.

The concept of engineering elegance seems to elude you. Unlike yourself, results oriented consumers have little care for aesthetics. We don't need marketing hype to sell us, performance is what matters. Valentine seems to understand their educated customer base and discovered that they can turn a pretty profit without stupid sales gimmicks.
See this DC magnetron power supply? One of the best on the market, but *gasp* how is that possible? Look at the thing - ugly, "70's looking"... no way it could work well!
Except you already spent money. The bonus for me is I don't have 1970's looking tech hanging from my windshield. Set your cruise for 9 over, listen to a podcast or audiobook, and chill out. You'll still get there on time.
Correct. I look it has a cost/benefit. Each person is different, but I generally drive 90-95% of my time around where I live and work. With that knowledge, I generally know that speed limits. Where cops may be placed to catch speeders. Buying an expensive radar detector would not pay for itself if I drive smart.

Well I am an engineer and I know you're getting ripped off. $500 for $50 worth of outdated tech on expired patents. The company has like 2 guys there. The outdated look is because they can't afford to change it. The expense is becuase it's a mom and pop operation. That bald guy is hand gluing the plastic case together.
So you got arrows to tell you what direction the cop just clocked you from. What are you going to do now? Deploy chaff?
If your the fastest car on the road you're getting pulled over.

LOL ... A lot of things that retail for $400 have about $50 worth of parts in them ... because of overhead cost, transportation costs, marketing cost, etc. It is still arguably the best radar detector on the market ... and by the way, the case is magnesium.

I guess your definition of engineer and mine are completely different. I don't drive trains lol
A real engineer would understand that the packaging doesn't matter as long as it is functional. I had my first V-1 in the 90's and don't see myself changing, just upgrading the internals.

You're paying for the ridiculously high inefficiencies of a product made by a company that literally only employs between 2 and 10 people. Most effective companies modernize the look of products to match the internal upgrades (i.e. Apple, Samsung, Ford). Failing to do so means your product is no longer being bought, your company loses economies of scale, and you have to charge more for your products to break even. Eventually you can only count on old loyal customers. That's probably why I haven't seen a radar detector in anybody's car in over 10 years.
"It's functional" in terms of what? Do you drive without it for a year, then drive with it for a year and count the differences in tickets you've received?
If you've been rocking this thing since the 90's, it's time to take the training wheels off. You don't actually need a bubble of electronic protection if you're not doing anything stupid.
I most likely have a better track record than you do and I have $0 invested in a radar detector. Plus I have a nice clean dash with no wires dangling from my windshield. And my interior looks like it's from this century. Radar, lidar, whatever, no upgrade needed. Common sense is technology proof.
