Why do they sometimes tell you a right turn on red is not allowed?

All I can see is, this tends to happen at intersections with a two-way street and a one-way street.

In my area generally it is acceptable to make a right turn if there is no red turn arrow. Only caveat is you have to come to full complete stop first.

It's for safety reasons. I often see it at roads where you can't see too far down the road to your left because of poor visibility.

Poor visibility or heavy pedestrian/bike traffic are the usual reasons for the prohibition.

That is just one of the thing that could contribute to it. There may be other factors. No right turn on red is there for safety reasons.

Traffic volume and sight distance are two factors for a "no right turn in red."

There are all kinds of different reasons. Sometimes no one can tell you the reason. I suspect the road commissioner's wife's friend's friend had a close call and said people are going to die if red right turns are allowed there. Sometimes there is simply no plausible reason for it and if you ask, either no one knows, or they say they were told to do it.

The "powers that be" have determined that a red light right turn is potentially too dangerous. Not much more than that.
