Anyone have thoughts on the auto stop/start feature on newer cars designed to save on gas by stopping the engine at lights/ stops? Seems like it may cause excessive wear on the engine by all the stopping and starting. But it's touted as a good feature.
I like it in my Prius, but since it uses the electric motor to get started, that's a pretty natural way to do it.
I believe the Chevy Cruse that I rented for three weeks last fall had that stop/start feature. If I'm remembering correctly, it wouldn't have had much of an impact on me, since that's what I'm used to with the Prius.
Wife has it on her 2017 Escape Titanium with the 2.0 EB engine. At first she didn't like it. Now she's gotten accustomed to it and just lets off of the brakes before she's ready to drive off. The engine starts right up. I don't know if there is excessive engine wear or if the starter or battery will hold up but it seems to work for her. If you have it and don't want it to work, you can buy a plug in at the trailer lights connection that will disable it. If you don't have that on your car, just releasing the brake a little every 10 seconds will defeat it. Most cars have a switch on the dash to disable it but you have to turn it off every time you start the engine. In most scenarios it's okay but I've seen times when I needed max power like now, not when the engine starts. It's saved the rear end a time or two not having it. As far as adding fuel mileage, I think for her driving it's pure BS. She gets the same hitting the switch to keep the engine running or not. She's getting 22-23 town driving. She's also not afraid to air it out occasionally. Label me not a fan of it.
My Camry hybrid does this hundreds times a day. We have many hybrid owners that crossed into 200 000 miles without any issues in this respect. Of course, we do not have starters.

Right, hybrids have been doing this for years now and running for many miles. With complications such as this, of course there is the added possibility of things going wrong though. It's the nature of new cars now.
It's likely the worst feature added to a car in the last decade. The engineer or team responsible for its existence should get kicked in the nuts by every unhappy owner.

You aren't an engineer. The system was designed from scratch to endure hundreds of starts per day. Ignition systems now can get an engine running in 1/4 of a crank rotation. The starter motor is not stressed.
Not a fan myself, because it was imposed on us via government decree, but it's here to stay.

That and heavy rear view mirrors glued on the windshield.
I'll never buy a car with that stop start.
