I actually don't know for sure. When I was in college one day my car was down, so I borrowed my Dad's, a 1964 Chrysler wagon. Coming home at 11pm on the lower deck of long, straight bridge (Richmond-San Rafael in CA) that was deserted except for me. I pegged the speedometer at 120, then kept going faster before I slowed down. I know it was at least 120, if I had to guess, maybe 130. Since then I have had a 1972 El Camino SS, and now a Challenger, but have a lot more common sense.
This was a long time ago, but I remember getting pulled over once on the NY State Thruway (I-87) in upstate New York doing 87 mph where the speed limit was 55.
I might have driven a bit faster than that at night on an open stretch of highway when I was in college and trying to see how fast I could drive my (4 cylinder) car without having it redline.
107 mph in a Toyota 1-ton, long ago on an empty, flat road. Some kind of cut-off kicked into effect, because the truck had slowly been inching up in speed and then sort of hiccuped. Not hard, but like someone suddenly taking foot off a gas pedal, which I had not done. This was on a road trip, filled with camping and other gear under a topper.
I was curious if it would actually get to the 120 mph shown on the speedo.

Legally? 255 kph / 155 mph (pegged by the governor) on the autobahn in my rental Mercedes S500. Sunroof open, stereo blasting, and getting passed by someone faster a few times.
Less legally? 175 in my Ferrari across Montana. At the time the speed limit was 'reasonable and prudent'. Being 28 years old that sounded about right.
