This makes it a total nightmare to clean interior drivers side windshield. All the YouTube detailers gripe about this.
Eighth gen civic dashboards are LONG, it looks ugly.
I've noticed this after acquiring my Mercedes 300SDL. The dashboard is so short, I can clean the windshield while sitting down.
I think you meant windshield. Old American cars of the 80s and older had LONG dashboards that required stretching to reach controls and good eyesight to read all the gauges that were laid out side by side across the length of the dashboard.
Windshields today are long for aerodynamics. Yes, they're a witch (with a B) to properly clean even when using extension rods. Earlier windshields were nearly flat and very short in height compared to today.cleaning them was easy. Wad of newspaper, Windex, and a few minutes. Today it takes a contortionist with long nimble fingers to get it clean. Today's newspapers aren't the same type of paper and do t work as well. Get a cheap weekly circular for the right type of paper if they still have it where you live. If not, a roll of brown paper towels might work. Home paper towels leave too much fiber behind. Some say use microfiber cloths but I've found they just smear the gunk around unless you replace them frequently.

What's the reason for this?
Yesterday, while I was eating my lunch in my car, I noticed how dirty the dashboard was. So after I finished eating and I cleaned my hands, I took a wet wipe and wiped it down. It took about 10 or 15 seconds, and now it looks as good as new. In short, it's a non-issue for me.
I'll never forget when my short little grandmother traded her '85 Pontiac 6000 for a new '91 Buick Regal sedan. She was so short she had to have the seat all the way forward, and she was amazed at how big the windshield was, I remember her saying "it almost goes above my head".
I think that bodystyle GM cars (Lumina, Regal, Grand Prix) is what started the trend, and the rest followed suit shortly after. Chrysler claimed to invent the 'cab forward' design with the '93 Concorde/Intrepid though.
I hate them. Wranglers, Miatas, and Minis are about as short of a dash you can get away with these days.
