I'd drive!! It's so much fun. My husband and I have taken six cross-country trips (to Nevada/California and back to NC) over the past three years, and we're heading off on another in July. It's really a blast. It's so awesome to see the country this way.
I also like the above idea of asking a friend to go with and then flying him or her back.
I have summer work in Albuquerque for the next two months. For a while I thought of driving there but 2000 miles roads put an end to the fantasy. Now I am wondering what can I do for transportation while there. There are no good options. Renting is $300 a week. Thought of buying a clunker but that has its own issues, like how to get rid of it when I am done or having to deal with breakdowns.
$300 a week? How about half that price?
Or just live close to the job location and rent occasional - as needed. I lived in Boston for a year and didn't need my car - it just became a $300 a month parking expense.

I'm in my early 60s and drive about 900 miles at least 1-2 times a year for vacations, and it's not a big deal, especially if you break it up with stops to see some sights and keep it to 8-10 hours a day on the road. For that long, I would drive. If you are not up to it, try Kayak, Priceline and other travel sites, you can rent a car by the month for as little as $12-$20/day in some cities, or just use Zipcars or Uber when you need to go somewhere.
In case some of you arecurious what I finally did. I flew. I am in a weekly Budget rental now for $230 a week. I am going to change it to a monthly "mini lease" program for $630 month. I am looking every day for a good used car for not much money. No luck so far. If I find one, I 'll buy it and this time definitely drive it back.
you'd be surprised how crappy a car you can buy and have it go 2 months.
I'd say, as long as it doesn't make any noise and passes a mechnic inspection, you're good to go for 2 months. Get something fun like a convertible that will hopefully be easier to sell.
