The sun has baked mine... But it did last for 10 years so I was happy with that. After I get a new one, I may open the current one up I think it just needs a new battery.

Anyway, I see the Garman now has voice activation, back up camera support, lane departure, drowsing driver and imminent crash warnings, built in dash cam, and a lot of features I like - even though it is kind of steep at $299.

If you have bluetooth, what can it do? It seems you can find a location in the gps and if a phone is listed, dial out through your phone to the location. This is something I currently do with my Blackberry Pad if I have a passenger. It would be nice to have this as a integrated feature.

What do you have, how old is it and what do you like and hate about it?

I'm interested to see if there are ANY current replies for anything other than a smartphone (I don't do those, thanks). I'm using a Garmin Nuvi from ~2009, but it's stopped being reliable and cuts out intermittently (power).

I've been reading through this review (I've had a lot of luck with the reviews from this site over the years) and considering my budget: The Best Car GPS | The Wirecutter

I use the 1390LMT and the larger 1490LMT. Lifetime maps.

I buy then used on eb*y. I have 4 as one in each of my 3 vehicles. And I carry a spare in my suitcase for when traveling/renting a car.

The larger 1490LMT and the smaller 1390LMT are the last Garmin's to state the word "recalculating" when you make a wrong turn. I want to know immediately when I make a wrong turn.

The new Garmin's don't say the word "recalculating". It just quietly redirects you. As do all of the other brands.

I want the word "recalculating" but apparently too many do not wish to have this feature - so Garmin dropped it.

Of course the newer Garmin's have more features. But I don't need any more features.

There are only two companies that make the maps - Teleatlas and Navteq.

Others of course many just love their Google Maps, Android Maps, and iPhone Maps on their cell phone.

Each to their own.

Costco sells a pretty decent Garmin for $150. That's what I would get if I was replacing one of my two Garmin units.

Problem with Costco is what they have available depends on the time of day and phase of the moon. Currently the local store has only one unit @ $270 and it is out of manufacture - a retired unit.

It may be discontinued, but it will get you from point A to point B. It also has lifetime map updates. Turns out one of mine is this model, and I have no complaints.

The problem with GPS is not the devices, who is providing you the maps and updates. And standalones all require payings extra for real-time traffic and updates.
