Mitsubishi appears to have settled on being a niche brand in North America while it pursues volume sales in other markets. Sales of their crossovers is keeping them afloat here, which is just as well because that's about all Americans are buying these days other than pickups.
They have contracted in size significantly over the last 2 decades. Case in point, I live in Dallas TX. There are currently 7 Mitsu dealerships in about a 100 mile radius. 3 of them are owned by the same guy. There used to be a lot more.
Nissan, in contrast, has 16 dealerships in the same geographical area. Mitsu management has made so many errors since the 90's that I'm amazed they've managed to stick around as long as they have. They have a very strange relationship with their parent company too, they get no support whatsoever.

I searched around Denver and surprised there are 3 Mitsubishi dealerships here. I honestly never see a new/newer Mitsubishi around here.
I miss the 3000GT. I haven't liked anything else they put out.
