Usually by the time they fail for the second or third time, (which is when we buy many of our cars), the car is on its last legs and it is not worth putting any money into it, so even when it fails, you just put electrical tape over the "Check Engine" light if you do not have some there already and keep going. If you are driving a $500 car, you really do not care much whether it gets .6 mpg less. Besides, there is probably something else not working that will reduce your mpg anyway

I did a MIL Eliminator Mod on my 17 y/o Celica when the o2 sensor went bad. Cost $3 and never have to worry about any o2 or catalytic converter error codes any more. Passes any computer based OBD emissions testing.

If it needs to be replaced, it will get replaced... If its not broken, why fix it?
