This could be an innovative game changer or a huge failure.

Hopefully it works out better than the rotary engine did. However one must give them credit for attempting new technology into mass production.

I love what Mazda is doing. Do more with less, fine by me.

Hmmmm.... They sort of got obsessed with innovations. I am not aware of any major manufacturer that went that route and stayed afloat.

They also have this weird technology: MAZDA: Brake Energy Regeneration System | Environmental Technology

Regen brakes like a hybrid but uses the juice to power headlights instead of the engine. All for negligible gas mileage.

I bet a system like that which powers the AC would save a lot of gas in hot climates

I have a feeling this is going to be along the concept already proven for diesel engines.

The diesel models you can get are pretty good too. Or I'll believe it when I see it.

The problem with compression gasoline engines is fuel quality. The reason no other manufacturer has went this route, is if you get a bad batch of gasoline, the vehicle will just stall out. The octane has to be consistent. Also, if your idiot spouse accidentally puts a tank a regular in, you have to have the expense of getting the fuel pumped out, the fuel lines flushed, to get the car running again. This is a lot of responsibility to place on the shoulders of the general public.

A standard gas engine is very forgiving when it comes to fuel quality.
