Curiously a lot of people can't parallel park. Some say they are afraid to damage the rims, some say it is just too much work. Where i live you got to parallel park because that's 99% parking.
I barely do it, so im not really sharp at it, but many cars have backup cameras now, so it should be a bit easier for some folks. I try to avoid it sometimes in fear of others who cant parallel park hitting my car.
I avoid it because I don't want my car parked on the street and subject to sideswipes, being bumped by other parallel parkers, people strolling by with keys, etc. Don't have a problem performing the maneuver to do so itself though.
I used to have a 1973 Pontiac Gran Ville- a huge boat of a car and could parallel park that beast like a champ so it's always been fairly easy for me and neither of our cars now have back-up cameras much less auto parking. It is a specific sequence of maneuvers that one has to learn to master but Gawd it's comical to see some folks (mostly women) flail so miserably at it.

It's not my favorite way to park, but at my kids school it was the main parking that they had. I'm okay as long as there's a decent amount of room, but I'm not master parallel parker so if I feel I can't get in the spot easily I'll go elsewhere. It helps that I have a Honda Civic and a backup camera.
