I have thought about getting one but a friend told me they're the worst gas-guzzlers out there. He said you'll get like 7 MPG. Are they all really that bad?
Well, technically, no, they don't guzzle gas, they guzzle Diesel. But, yeah, MPG was obviously not an important design goal.
A buddy has an H1, the real deal, *that* is an impressive off-road vehicle. But the later GM models are essentially a body kit on a pickup truck frame, they sort of look the part, but share little DNA with the H1. I mean, yeah, they are about as good as the underlying pickup would be as a 4X4, which can be good, but the H1 is really awesome off road. It is slow and thirsty, but it will just about climb a tree.
Hey now, I drive a Barn (Sprinter Van), it's 7' wide, 9' tall and loooong, and I'm averaging 25mpg... Stop pooping on rolling barns. That Hummer II thing is an abomination that should have landed the designers on the gallows (and execs who signed off on it).
On the Factual side, it looks like H2's get about 10mpg based on real people and real driving. The H3 is little better at 15mpg, and the original/military Hummer is sitting at 8mpg.
Your van is more aerodynamic, it has a more efficient engine different gearing and fuel management.
A HUMVEE H1 is the equivalent of a dinosaur. It has literally the aerodynamics of a brick or barn. It's all flat 90* angles. Actually I like the H1 and H2. It would of been a even better off roader with a solid D60 front axle. The only reason I'm not getting one is because i have too many trucks right now. (4 trucks/SUV)
Otherwise i wouldn't mind a military model as a off road truck. But I can build a pick up to be better cheaper
Hummers are getting 14-15, and that's not horrible or terrible. It's the same as the city numbers for most full sized pickups and SUVs such as a Tahoe or F150 of the same year. When you drive a large, heavy vehicle you have to expect lower mileage than in a small or mid-sized aerodynamic car.
14-15mpg is terrible gas mileage these days. My brother has an F-150 and gets more than that. And his is 14 years old.
Worse than the hummers are the exhaust belching trucks with modified loud exhausts. I'm frankly surprised they haven't made it illegal to remove your cat and don't require emission tests in all 50 states. If I was in charge modified exhausts whether on a car or motorcycle would be banned. They are air and noise pollution and generally used by people I'd have no interest in hanging out with. Probably not a popular statement in an automotive forum.
Still, those redneck types with a loud exhaust belching black into the air every time they hit the gas with a pair of dangling balls hanging off the hitch? Lob a hand grenade into the bed of their truck for all I care.
I didn't know anyone was still buying these things! You'll get made fun of big time - everyone thinks only jerks and d-bags drive them
I have never understood this. Sure I have no interest in owning a tank on wheels but why would I judge others for having a different taste in vehicles? Who am I to say they are worthy of being made fun of? If they can afford a Hummer they can afford the gas it takes to operate one.

Not sure, maybe stop by the local dealer and ask if the new ones get better mileage?
