2016 Nissan Rogue
4 cylinder engine with CVT transmission
currently around 9700 miles on the odemeter & the oil change is estimated at 10,000.

I don't know what type of oil it has, but I definitely know the viscosity is 0W-20.

Should I just stick with what the manual says? The manual says 0w-20, but can a higher viscosity like 5W-20 or 5W-30 be used. Isn't 5W-30 more durable for California weather?

I also usually stick to Full Synthetic & high mileage protection oil filters.

What's the deal with 0W-20 anyway? Its not as common as the higher viscosities?

The lower number designates viscosity at start up the higher number designates viscosity at operating temperature, unless you are having temperature extremes i'd stick with the 0W-20.
There should be a scale in your owners manual recommending which viscosities to use under what conditions.

0W20 is available as a full-synthetic or a synthetic blend. Stick with the factory-specified oil as everyone else has said. Both my Toyota and Honda call for 0W20 and that's all they get, in the full-synthetic variety.

Most newer cars call for 0W20 now, it seems.

Agreed. It's pretty much the only thing I ever go to Wal-Mart for.

0W-20 is a change from the 5W and 10W weights due to fuel economy standards increasing. I would follow the manual, if you live in a hot part of CA it's possible you should use a slightly heavier weight.

My concern long term is that the oil viscosity was reduced in an attempt to increase MPG slightly but long term effects may not be good. Chances are however that by the time you are done with your car the engine will still be running just fine.

Just stick with synthetic 0w20 like others said. These oils have high quality base stocks which will protect your Rogue just fine.
