The Toyota RAV4 is considered a "chick" car. Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot would give you more space. They are both very reliable. I have owned both.
I had a CRV and liked it quite a bit. I have 2 kids and it was comfortable, well laid out and well built. The 4WD was not designed well though and it was horrible in icy conditions at higher speeds. Went to an Outback which is also good, but now that I don't need the 4WD anymore I am considering going back to the Honda
Highlander. get used one. Limited has 3rd row, I set comfortably 6 adults plus luggage in it. Bulletproof reliability.
V is too small. And you will NOT like underpowered engine.
My CRV is a girl's car, but only 'cause I'm a girl.
but, really, your virility is threatened by what people think of your car?
Maybe you should get a black one and put huge tires on it. Add naked-girl mudflaps. Oh, and paint flames on it! I've always wanted to paint flames on my car!
I've ridden in the back seat of a RAV4, and didn't find it comfortable.
That's funny - CR-V called a girl's car... It might not showcase masculinity, but it's a great family car. comfortable, easy and enjoyable to drive.
Otherwise, i would go with Toyota Highlander. I've heard that the 2016's 3.5 V6 is a great family car. 8 seats, spacious, easy to handle - and sporty looking one.
I think the compact crossovers are kind of small as a family car. There's not much cargo room behind the back seat. I have a 6 cylinder Outback. A lifted station wagon on what now passes for a full size car platform. Four 6'2" adults fit in it comfortably and the square feet of cargo floor behind the back seat is much larger. The wheelbase is longer so it's a better ride.
CR-V's are great cars. I've had mine for 15 years. I have 150,000 miles on it and it is going strong. The only issue we have had in 15 years, other than routine maintenance, was that the AC went out. It was a manufacturer defect and it died 10 years after purchase. It's something that was known and has been corrected in the newer models. It is one of Consumer Reports highest rated cars for reliability and resale. Go down to a dealer and try it out for size in person. The back seat on mine isn't huge, but it's okay for the few times I have back seat passengers. It's perfectly comfortable for passengers under 5'9" or so, but not 6 footers. I don't know the age of your kids, or how long until they become large teenagers, but that would be something to consider. I wouldn't get a CR-V if I was expecting to have big teenage boys in a couple years. The cargo area with the back seat folded down is quite spacious.
edited to add: Chick car? I don't care what other people say about my model of car. I can't imagine letting other people's ignorant opinions rule my decisions.

I wouldn't be concerned about what's a "girl's car". What people on the streets will think of you when you drive by is about the dumbest reason to buy a particular car that I can imagine.
From the OP it sounds as though the main purpose of this new vehicle is to transport people. He thinks he wants an SUV of some kind, but for the intended use, and for almost every normal use, a minivan is more practical and useful than an SUV, traditional or crossover.
