Out of curiosity, I've always wondered what is the least amount of information police can easily find someone if the know model, color and couple digits of license plate number.

Does anyone know?

assuming the plates actually belong to the car, then the cops can likely find the car.

Probably depends on the state.

Also depends on what numbers. Usually the first few numbers indicate the year the plates were issued (generally when the car was sold unless you need to get new plates. That's not very helpful if you have a new Toyota Camry in silver or conversely an old Toyota Camry with old plates from when it was first sold in silver. On the other hand if you have an old Camry with new plates, then it would be as they'll mostly have old plates.

It helps, but would take time since in many (larger) states there could hundreds or thousands of that same color, make and model containing those plate numbers.

You can do a simple search and find matching cars, and with a partial plate, model, model year range, etc. Yes it may be a lot in a state but you can narrow that down by city and by neighborhood depending on where the vehicle was seen. If you have partial information to report, just report it

All is a national database.

Come on now. My local Barney Fife hick town cop car has 3 computers, 2 cell phones, and a band radio.

They'll find you if they want you bad enough.

There is a command in SQL called "like". This command will allow you to search a database with a fuzzy command.

Here is the command:
Select lic_plate, owner, make, model from licplate_table
where
lic_plate like "xyz*";

You will list all of the plates in your state that start with xyz. Eyeball the list to find your make and model.
A couple of digits are not much to go on. Be sure that you are right.
