The styling was/is common across the Atlantic and Pacific for years. Why does the US require it's own styling?

Because we can. If I'm going to spend my hard earned money on an automobile I'm going to like the way it looks.

Another reason cars are cheaper in Asia. They don't have the American culture of multimillion dollar lawsuits. Any car you buy in the USA has a big cushion of the price built in to go to pay the cost of lawsuits against the manufacturer.

Here in the US, the emission standards are based on fleet averages. That means they can sell all the larger vehicles they want as long as they are offset with smaller vehicles. The smaller vehicles are sold for low or no profit margin, to make up for this they jack up the price on the larger more desirable vehicles.
