It's funny. I was looking at the list of trucks, and one truck I've always wanted is a Silverado, and on this list is a 2007 Silverado. They must be talking about single cab and 4X2, because I've seen no 2007 4X4 crew cabs for $10k unless it has about 300k miles on it.
As someone who has looked at them, it's tough to find anything in an S2000 for under 10k.

A practical, "I've never owned one but finally want to" choice: 2002-2004 WRX with reasonably low (under 100K) miles, assuming there are any left

A "I'd like something different and fun, but also new-ish enough to a point I can delude myself into thinking it won't break right away" choice: 2009-ish Volvo C30/V50

Manual only, of course.
I heartily agree, but, I guess I would, considering my screen name. I would be more specific and get an 89 or early 90 car with the good headlights, the pop-out rear windows, and no airbags.

The 89 and later 325i, you don't have to take the big high-torque nut off the end of the crankshaft to change the timing belt. You want to make sure that timing belt gets changed on time, this is a crash engine. Book says 60K on the belt, I would go 50K. The job is not hard to DIY, you can take care of radiator hoses and v-belts while you are at it.

Yeah, if you don't want to go there, there are all sorts of good pickups, 15K would buy the best MG-B in the world, get a chrome bumper one with the dual carbs, 72 or earlier.

Some C-5 Corvettes, get a manual, you might get some really good C-4 cars in this price range too. The C-4 cars get no respect, but they are a good sports car for the money.

All sorts of Miatas for this money, you wont' go wrong on them.

You could buy a rather plainly optioned 60's Detroit convertible, if you are more into the "vintage" side of this and less into "sports" (they are boats with stock suspension, there are upgrades available but to me a really stiffly sprung say 65 Impala is sort of weird.)

All the cars I mention above, you should pay only for gas, tires, and oil, the car itself should appreciate over time, or at least not depreciate significantly (well, maybe the C-5 Corvette will lose some value in the next few years, but not badly, and they should start back up say 7 years out.)

94 to 97 for the 1.8, earlier for the 1.6, with many turbo options. Miata shares hard parts with the 323. Very reliable.

In other words, made in japan is what you want.

Buy $10k worth of Bitcoins and it could be worth $100k in 6 months.

Truck - Ford Ranger or maybe a single cab F-150. $10 K will get you a very nice ranger.

Fun car - Mustang or Camaro. Most others will cost too much for repairs at that price mark.
Personally though I would buy a 1996 Mitsubishi Spyder w- something. The one with a twin turbo 6, all wheel steering and drive, and a segmented hard top convertible. Not at all practical, but I have always wanted one and I saw one for $10K recently.

WRX would be a decent option, but although I am generally not image conscious, I would feel uncomfortable at times climbing into/out of a high school car at a business meeting. If you go this route, try to find one, if possible, that is not riced out. Good luck with that though.

Vette is a good options if you are young, flexible only need one passenger and no cargo and are reasonably handy.

Jeeps are fun. Unpleasant for a long drive terrible performance and handling, awful ride - but what a balst int he summer!

Pontiac G-8 GT (or a GXP, but you will not find one for that price).

$10K is a good amount of money for many mildly fun cars. How far back are you willing to go? I would nto recommend getting some high tech marvel with 250K miles (Like a CTS-V), but you cna get into some pretty nice cars at the upper mid range fun level for $10K. You may find some that woudl not otherwise be sensible but have been completely rebuild (like maybe a Superbird).

I would stay away form pricier full size luxury trucks or suvs or expensive sports cars. You not only have to go to much higher mileage/age, but they are very expensive to repair and maintain at that age. (I take my truck that was $55,000 or $60,000 new. At 70K miles it was selling for $25K plus or minus, now at 160K miles it is selling at $16K. By the time it is down to $10K nothing will be working).

Even if you are incredibly (edit: no idea why that cut off, sorry) wealthy, why spend money on something that doesn't change the experience at all?

Unless you mean a motorcycle?
I meant motorcycle. Gobs of fun for 10k

I had two different '91s before - one at college with an AT and a stick a few years later. Dunno why, but having the airbag gave me a sense of peace even though deep down I questioned that it would work in case of a collision. Thankfully I never got to find out. Still ****еd I sold the Alpine White MT one for $2,500 to fund a new Impreza. Should have just hung on to it and found the money elsewhere.
