More than 600K cars were flooded in recent hurricanes and most (60%) were not insured.

Therefore they could be resold and the sellers might "forget" to tell you they were flooded.

A Carfax report won't show it as a flooded car.

Buyer beware.

The only works if the car had an insurance claim filed on it. It not going to show anything if the vehicle was uninsured for that type of loss(no comp coverage).

Do you mean the car had just basic injury type ins?
Our state you must show proof to get plates.
Of course, you could always cancel ins right afterwards, I guess.
Thanks for all the links.

60% of cars not insured ?

Where did that number come from?

Car insurance is mandatory in 49 states (I think). What's the rule in your state about people not getting or not paying car insurance?

On an older car that's owned free and clear there is no requirement in any state to have either collision or comprehensive insurance.

A claim for a flooded car on the comprehensive part of the policy would trigger a flooded car title record.

But no comprehensive insurance = no claim = no record of a flood.

Most states require insurance coverage regardless if the car is paid off or not. That said there are a lot of people who get insurance then register their cars and then drop the coverage.

Most states require liability insurance. Collision/Comp are entirely optional unless their is a lien on the title

States require LIABILITY insurance, not comprehensive. Liability does not cover flood loss.

As someone said, "no comprehensive insurance = no claim = no record of a flood"

No website is going to know if a car has been flooded unless an insurer tells them they handled a claim for it. No insurer is going to have a claim for it unless a policyholder files it. And no policyholder is going to file a claim if flood damage isn't covered by their policy.
