I recently installed a new distributor on my 2001 Nissan Xterra (V-6, 230,000 miles, auto) got the timing pretty close. I got it fired up and noticed there was a lot of smoke pouring out from the rear wheel area and nothing coming out of the exhaust tip it self. I set the timing took it for a spin and I was getting almost no power off the line. I babied it back home popped the hood and noticed the the exhaust leak that I had was much louder, and the right side exhaust manifold was pretty red. I had it sitting in my driveway for about 3-4 weeks. I'm wondering did something crawl in there and partially plug the exhaust?

Maybe full of nuts or debris? The squirrels are busy packing away the harvest. You'd be surprised where things end up. I have an old mail box (now sort of) attached to a tree house on one of my properties. The reason why I say 'sort of' is that the weight of the acorns a squirrel stored in the mailbox almost tore it off the wall.

You actually might have a clogged cat.
I just put a high flow cat on my 90 GMC 4X4. Cost 180$ installed; took 35 minutes. Made a huge difference.
And years ago I fixed an old Mustang with that problem. That one was so bad it wouldn't even start - NO vacuum being pulled.
If you didn't cover, or otherwise block off, ALL openings to the engine while working on the car you may very well have a dead critter plugging the inside of the engine/exhaust.
