As I've stated many times, I believe in having multiple-used cars instead of a new car. I don't like car payments.

What's the longest any of you guys have driven a car after having to replace the transmission?

I had a 96 Ford Taurus, replaced the Tranny in about 2003, and I drove it until 2016 until it was time for a new tranny (I had a leak and the fluid leaked into the clutches and ruined the tranny again).

So whats the longest you went with a car having replacing the transmission.

The Taurus did sit for about 2 years though, at some point.

Not very long, and I have a lot of experience with it. First was a 1990 Bronco at 138,000 miles. Cost $3,400 for that rebuild. Traded it in about a year later. Then a 1996 4Runner at 90,000, cost $2,800 and traded it in less than a year later after head gasket went, and decided it was junk. Then a 2002 Jeep Liberty at 90,000, $3,200 again about a year before we traded it in.

I have never personally bought a new car, always used.
I always had a company furnished new car every so many years.
so the used cars for us was the family car which was used by anybody in the family.
Except for regular maintenance parts (battery, plugs, belts, and only one time the alternator), I have never had transmission problems ...
Always kept cars until they just had too many miles on it, like over 250,000 miles.

Somewhere I do not understand why transmissions fail with some people ?
We had manual and automatic transmissions.

I have owned automatics and manual transmission vehicles , and never had a transmission issue. Drain and replace transmission fluid every year, or other year , and you should never have a problem. Unless you are abusing the car.

Although I've owned my Accord since new, it's had a rebuilt tranny for the past 7 yrs / 80k miles, which still shifts great.

1989 GMC rebuiLt the TH700R4 at 150,000. Currently 393,000 total miles 243,000 after rebuilt. Shifts fine. The engine is burning oil but its original never touched.

2000 Chevy C3500 rebuilt the 4L80E at 140,000. Drove to 210,000 and I sold the truck as I had no use for it anymore as I was shutting down my electrical business and I didn't need it for consulting work. . When I sold it it shifted fine. The AC stopped working.

1988 CHEVY K3500 turbo 400. 120,000 miles it took a dump. Not sure why. Threw a GM reman but I sold the truck a year later as it was by far the biggest pile of crap I ever owned. 454 Engine was also replaced the year before. Cut my losses and threw it on autotrader for $8500. Truck was 10 years old. Besides the day I got married this was also a happy day. I sold it fully disclosing the issues I had. Dudecstill bought it. I couldn't believe it.

None of my other trucks needed transmissions

I didn't exactly replace the entire transmission, but the differential failed on my 5-speed Golf at 372k miles and put a hole in the transmission case. My mechanic had a spare transmission case, so he put my gears plus new synchros in it -- I guess it could be described as remanufactured. Replaced the clutch at the same time, since the transmission was already out. That was 5 years and 296k miles ago and no transmission problems since then, though I did replace the clutch again after 260k miles.

I bought my 2000 Kia new; 14 months later, the tranny had to be rebuilt.
And I STILL kept that piece of junk another 10 years, until after the warranty ran out.

2002 PT Cruiser transmission went out on the way to Raleigh in 2008. Replaced at Chrysler dealer with factory rebuild. Still going strong at 120,100 miles today.

Maybe does not count, I had to replace a transmission the first week that I had a new Camaro Z28, but then I drove it for 18 years, my son drove it another year or two and when the engine died, sold it to a guy who wanted the transmission.

I think my son put a new clutch plate in it.

We replaced the trans on one car A Dodge caravan and it lasted about 2 days past the 1 year warranty.

A family member put an F150 trans in a ford ranger and it lasted 200,000 miles and more.

We had a trans rebuilt in one car and then everything else broke within a year so we scrapped it. That was another Dodge Caravan, or the Plymouth equivalent.

I put either three or four transmissions in my first Jensen Healey. they were mostly used transmissions, one was rebuilt. It tended to eat transmissions (and it was a manual). My current one has no transmission problems (because the engine has been in pieces in the garage for several years).

Most of our beater cars go to the scrap yard if the trans fails, and some go when it starts to fail if there are a lot of other problems..
