My car had broken down and I had to borrow my father’s 1964 Chrysler wagon for a night class at a college about 40 miles away. On the way home about 11pm with no traffic, on a straight, flat bridge I pinned it at 120 mph and went a bit faster before slowing down. Now, of course, I know it was dumb, but at age 18 it was a thrill.
The most memorable for me would be when I took delivery of my brand spanking new 1957 Ford convertible.
I had worked from age 13, and saved every penny because I knew at thirteen, I would want a car when I turned sixteen.
I graduated high school at sixteen,in June,of 1956, and ordered the convertible in October .
It was the first of the new 57's in my small town.
Because I was under age, the title was in my dad's name, until he later transferred it to me.
Back then it was common for the dealer to deliver the car right to your door, unlike today.
That was one of the happiest, and most remembered days of my life.
If memory serves me correctly the full price was around $2700.00,including optional paint color.,and I payed cash for the car.
I wonder how many 16 year old's could do that today, without mommy and daddy paying for their car.
Long story short. 19 years old, came home from date, using upholstery cleaner to remove small blood streaks from back seat before the stain set in permanently. Not the last time we went parking in some farmer’s cornfield. But we did check her cycle schedule more closely.
