Since they discontinued all the full sized 2 door truck based SUV's I had to switch. But I didn't go far as I went to a full sized 4 door pickup. Though I loved my Broncos ( and even the truck based Cherokees I had) and would like to have another 78/79 Bronco as a "toy", the 4 door pickup is more practical.
I own my third Xterra right now, and I would buy another in a heartbeat, assuming it hasn't been dumbed down to a CUV. I nearly cried when I heard Nissan was discontinuing them. I wish car manufacturers actually listened to feedback from owners...there are several threads going in this forum right now with comments about wanting traditional, truck-based, 4WD, and/or boxy SUV's. The Xterra meets all my needs...4WD capability in snow and mud, adequate cargo space, supportive seats for my back injury, not outrageously expensive, basic features that I need plus the one I really wanted...heated seats! I'm going to be really upset if something happens to this one and I have to choose between CUV's, which are going to leave me housebound for half the winter.

I had a 1990 Bronco and loved I it, only traded it in when worn out. Have also had a Cherokee with the old reliable 4.0 inline 6, and enjoyed it too. Currently an F150 5.0 V8 suits my needs better anyway with a travel trailer to pull, and still can go off-road, but I have thought about buying an old Bronco to restore for fun.
I will only buy truck based SUV's. I feel an SUV should look and feel like a truck; if I wanted it to feel like a car I would buy a station wagon. I like ruggedness, cargo space, less technology, etc.. My current SUV gets maybe 15 mpg tops, but it has become the norm, so it really doesn't bother me too much. To me a CUV is like a man wearing lipstick...it wants to be a truck but looks and performs like a car.
I have an Expedition. I've loved it, but I'm about to downsize to an Expedition, which is more like a car now. I just don't need something that big anymore. We do still use the 3rd row seat a lot, and appreciate the space in the back when we take trips, so not going away from an SUV altogether.
We had a Toyota Forerunner for 10 years that uses the Tacoma base I believe and my wife liked it because she thought it was sturdy and therefore safe. We traded it in for a Grand Cherokee and she loves that for the same reasons. Other smaller, lighter SUV's felt cheap to her like the Nissan's, Mazda's and the BMW's . I drove a new Rav4 and a relative has a Pontiac Torrent which is a Chevy Equinox and they felt like aluminum cans.
She drives a fine line though. She drove my F150 crew cab yesterday and she thought it was too big, clunky with a hard ride.
We both like the more rugged SUV's but we do see the appeal to the truck based ones.
Yes. I drive a C-Max hybrid that gets 35mpg, and I would buy a hybrid truck based SUV that got 30mpg. I had a Grand Cherokee and a Cherokee
