Does anyone else find the idea of new pickup trucks costing around fifty grand to be ridiculous?
From what I have heard the reliability of these trucks isn't something to brag on either.

Yeah they’ve become luxury vehicles rather than dependable basic work rigs.

I remember when I was a kid, if there was a pickup parked in front of your house, the neighbors worried about their property values going down! Pickups were the least expensive vehicles that were offered at the dealerships. They were pretty much used for work only. They were all pretty bare boned and most had six cylinder engines and the three speed manual transmission on the steering column. Now they are the top selling vehicles, outrageously expensive, loaded to the gills and guzzle enough gas to make our enemies in the middle east smile!

In all fairness tho, basic work trucks are still fairly inexpensive especially with end of the year incentives.

I don't really think the overall price of trucks has skyrocketed its more a reflection of the available content.

Loaded trucks may very well be exceedingly expensive to the average car buyer but dang are they ever nice and absolutely comfortable.

You can still buy a basic new work truck for about $20K

But I'll admit that I rarely see one like that.

Most people buy the loaded trucks. It’s nice to have access to a truck sometimes. I don’t like the gas mileage on them.

Everything is expensive now days, but as another poster stated, base line regular cab trucks are still available inexpensively as far as new vehicles are concerned. We just always hear about the price of the models in the upper trim levels. So, if one has the money, they can get a pickup with pretty much any extra available in the automotive world. Might as well be comfortable, right? Can't afford every option known? Mid grades have all the options of top line trucks from the 80's/90's. My mid level 07 ram is like that. I paid 25000 for the 4x4 quad cab model in 07, it stickered at 35. Now that truck is probably about 40 or so, sticker. (I was actually pricing them earlier this year) So a new one should be able to be had for about 30 or so. Not really too bad in todays market considering non luxury cars can be had for the same price. You don't need to get the top line model!

And they are reliable as well. A modern truck, just like a car, should be expected to last an easy 200,000 miles. You can go 100,000 miles before a tune up. Oil changes are approaching 10,000 miles on modern vehicles. This isn't the seventies anymore. Modern trucks, IMO, are actually cheaper to maintain now then they were 30 years ago!

Love my pick up.....would rather drive it than my wife's car......only problem, once they find out you have a truck, every friend or relative wants to borrow it. I have a relative who bought a house that needs work, borrowed my truck a few times, then said after his lease is up, he's getting a truck.....guess what, got another car, so now we wait for the phone call. As far as expense, yup, cost a bit, but look at all you can do with it

Problem is that dealers rarely stock the entry level trucks.

I recently did a buy/build on the current trucks I own if I were to buy them today. Price hovered around 65,000/69,000 and these were XLT and Lariat. if I went crew cab it would add abput 4K. If I went to platinum package it would kick up another 5k. Granted with a few incentives the price would drop a few thousand

Look what happened the last time gas prices skyrocketed. Truck prices fell off a cliff.
