When the key is turned to start the vehicle one of the 4 red lights that show an open door is on. It's the right front door.
If the door and the body are not making proper contact when the door is closed why doesn't the battery drain down overnight? 96 Honda Accord.
To answer your question, a lot of vehicles have fail safes to prevent the battery from draining. For instance, older vehicles if you leave the interior light on, it will drain the battery. A lot of vehicles will turn off the light after some time to prevent the battery from draining.
As to your issue, I would open the door and thoroughly clean the both the post and where the contact is made. I've seen similar instances where the vehicle won't chirp when trying to lock the doors because it thinks one door is not shut even though it is. Just wipe down the latch area and try again.

May also have to move the strike in 1-2mm at that door, to deactivate its sensor. They can shift over time depending on severity of duty, and are often adjusted during assembly to lend a 'premium' feel, with ease of opening and a quiet close.
I once owned a car where I moved all four strikes in about 1/8", and it changed the entire handling feel of that vehicle! It rolled further given the same effort at the gas pedal, and even the steering felt more direct and tightened up.
Since a dent on the right door was affecting the smoothness of the up and down of the window, I removed the door panel. Now the open door light does not stay on. I have not had a chance to take a closer look but removing door panel affected the light.
I had that issue. When you turned the door ajar light came in. Seems like at one time the seatbelt latch must of gotten caught in the door and put a dent in it. Right where the plunger would normally make contact. The dent was deep enough that when you turned your arm on the door placed enough pressure to very minutely flex th3 door. And it showed a door ajar.
I took off the door panel and tapped the dent out
I did that and I had the door panel off trying to improve a dent to the right front door. With the panel off and the door closed the red light is off. If I close the door with the engine running the light stays on. I can apply pressure to the door near the plunger and the light goes off. Until I decide to go to a parts yard for a new door, which might not be practical cost wise, I need to build up the area of the door frame that comes in contact with the plunger.
Maybe some stick-on rubber part maybe 1/8 thick could do it.
