I have gooey residue on my side windows and I don't want to use chemicals to clean it for fear of dribbling chemicals down onto the car's side and stripping away wax. Any recommendations? The residue is really gooey and wants to move around rather than come off the glass altogether.

If you don't want to run out and get something a little kitchen vegetable oil on a paper towel left sitting on the residue for a while followed by brisk rubbing with a towel and clean-up with rubbing alcohol should do the job.

I used a orange based citrus solvent to remove decal residue on glass. Also works well for tree sap. Safe for plastic and clear coat.
What is this “wax” of which you speak? Our 2002 Legacy was waxed just once by accident when I had it detailed five years ago. Paint is totally fine. This isn’t 1980.
Rubbing alcohol seems to do a good job of breaking down adhesive. In a pinch, hand sanitizer does the same.
