But, I have another idea: just tow it off the dealer's lot for a mile or so to a plaza. Then tell the tow truck guy to drop the car and pay him $50 or whatever it costs. Then just drive the vehicle out of state. I will either bring my current tag and attach it to the vehicle or use those CA paper plates.

No cop will give you are hard time if you tell him you just bought the vehicle. I knew someone who was driving in AZ or TX or around there. A cop pulled him over for no tags. Coversation:

Cop: I pulled you over since you have no tags. Do you have tags?
Driver: Nope.
Cop: Do you have proof of insurance?
Driver: Nope.
Cop: Ok, why don't you have tags?
Driver: I just bought the car.
Cop: Do you have a bill of sale?
Driver: Nope.
Cop: Ok, have a nice day and drive safe!

And Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, drove for years wth no plate, and never got pulled over.

Sounds like quite the scam to avoid paying sales tax and registration!

Make it temporarily inoperable. Take the battery out, disconnect the alternator, really anything you can fix yourself in a few minutes.

In no way, shape, or form will AAA pay to tow your operational vehicle if they know it is safely operational. They also refuse to pay to tow cars without current registration and tags, even non-operational.

What world do you live in? I saw someone mention California, I used to live there and had expired TN tags and got a tow no problem. Here in TN they don't ask for literally anything.

Lol, granted this was when I was much younger (and dumber), but this one acquaintance I used to know, huuugggge alcoholic. He used to call AAA every single night and have his car towed home from the bars. So, at the time, it was about the funniest thing I had ever heard.

I have been refused a tow by AAA when my car was operable. I don't remember the exact circumstances. I think I wanted it towed from one repair shop to another and wasn't sure it would make the trip. They refused.

I'm sure it's in the contract.

But asking for a tow because you are too drunk to drive? I'm pretty sure they aren't going to want to do that.

Ugh. Stop trying scams already. You have multiple posts asking about various ploys....this, checking accts etc....Pay the money or don't buy the damn car.

And cops just say "have a nice day!" To someone with a car, no bill of sale, no tags, nothing? What about stolen cars? Those get a "have a nice day!" too? And attach tags from another car? LOL

*nevermind- this is the poster guy that sleeps overnight in dealer lot because he had an oil change coupon.

How's that spot under the bridge? You want us to believe you have $25k in cash to drop on a car and you're doing all of this to scam your way out of taxes? They don't sell vans within your own state?

The short answer is to purchase the new vehicle in the state where poster wants to register vehicle.

Then all of these "schemes" need not be attempted.

It's not as if this new car is unique or the last one on the planet.

Just make the best deal in state where poster wishes to reside in. Why complicate all?

On another note.

I just purchased a used car from a new car dealer out of state. Because of circumstances I could not easily get temporary plates.

I did get and show proof of insurance - and the new car dealer let me drive the car home with Dealer Plates.
Dealers rarely do this. But to get my money an exception was made.

.
Sales tax in California is based on the city that you live in. I live in Oxnard and the sales tax is 7.75% I work in Ventura and the sales tax is 7.25%

I have no idea how anyone will get out of paying the sales tax.

For example Oxnard Auto Center has the following dealers:

DCH Audi Oxnard
DCH Toyota of Oxnard
Alexander Buick
Oxnard Infiniti
DCH Lexus of Oxnard
Alexander Cadillac
Team Nissan
Oxnard Hyundai
Mercedes-Benz of Oxnard
DCH Honda of Oxnard
GMC Trucks
Vista Ford
Alexander Genesis
Vista Lincoln

Ventura Auto center has the following dealers:

Gold Coast Acura
Paradise Chevrolet
Crown Chrysler
Crown Dodge
Crown Jeep
Crown Ram
C.J. Wilson's Mazda
Ventura Toyota
Ocean Honda
Jaguar of Ventura
Kirby Kia
Kirby Subaru
Land Rover of Ventura
Barber RV
Ventura Volkswagen

If I was to buy a Honda in Oxnard the sales tax would cost me more than if I was to buy the same car in Ventura. Unless the op knows something about how to get out of the sales tax that I don't know. I would love to see something in print. Speculation or scams that someone has pulled are not fact.

The only problem is the tow truck would be going to the dealer and seeing a brand-new car to tow. He might have some questions...or not. that is what concerns me.
