I had a car with a leaking rear drum brake wheel cylinder leaking but that just made a big mess and I lost some brake feel. But it was a old truck and it had ****ty brakes

A bad brake booster check valve will cause a hard and high brake pedal intermittently. The brake booster will not store vacuum for assist. The assist will be there only after a period of deceleration, so a fast transfer from gas pedal to brake pedal will result in a hard, high, unresponsive brake pedal initially. Brake booster check valves are easily replaceable but do not fail very often.
