i dont like convertibles much, but if i had the choice i would pick the hardtop convertible over a soft top convertible. either way the first thing to do if you buy one, is to make sure the mechanism has been properly serviced and is in good working order.
Had a BMW retractable hardtop convertible for. 8 years until recently. Never had any issues but it was always in the back of my mind when the warranty expired.
I honestly don't know if I would do it again. My weekender today hss a targa top....which I seldom put on.
I have a VW EOS with the hard top convertible. I love it and prefer it over any soft top. They do require regular maintenance however, and you can expect to shell out some $$$ for that.

What's regular maintenance? A package offered at the dealership, or suggested lubrication etc either at home or private garage?
It might take a long time to find one. There are a lot of rag top Chryslers around, but I very rarely ever see a tin top convertible. I have a 2012 rag top which except for the roof itself isn't much different. A thing that annoys me most is that you have to choose between putting the top down and using the trunk. I expect the tin top might be slightly worse. Between my wife and I this is the 17th convertible we have owned.
A retractable hardtop is more machinery to go wrong and break. IMO it's about as useful as a "hole in the roof" sunroof that winds up leaking.
Most cars today are designed to drive with the windows up for better gas MPG. Top down is just more weight to carry with lot's more air drag to overcome all of which reduces MPG ......a lot!!
Most of my cars over 50 years have been convertibles, I like them more. My current car is a Honda S2000 that I bought new in '99. I haven't seen anything else I want or I would have bought it.
I like soft top convertibles, but not Chrysler 200s or Sebring convertibles. they're better for year round use, but they're more brown to breaking....... that said, I like the look of the soft top better

Convertibles?? Nah, don't think so.
Most of life isn't about MPGs dude. Smiles per gallon is more like it. Gas is cheap. I've done entire road trips with the top down.
