They are the same as the systems in may manufacturers cars, from auto braking and adaptive cruise control to lane departure and recovery steering in many cars. These systems are getting better and better and the cars using them more and more automatically are coming.

Notice the can't wait part? Thats because until you can safely do so people will be waiting....

People still have to say awake or be alert when they are the only one in the driverless car.
Currently. But once the car is a better driver then me, I will actually be safer letting them drive while I sleep.

But doesn't that defeat the purpose of a 'driverless' car?

A 'driverless' car to me means being able to do whatever the hell you want in a car, from napping, eating, watching movies, using your ipad, etc etc etc.

If you have to pay attention is that really 'driverless'?
Nope, thats why they arent there yet. But eventually we will see driverless cars with large screen tv's so you can play xbox on long trips.

My estimate? 4 year or so. I know they're claiming 2 years, but I bet it takes them twice as long.

At least 20 years, and I really think it’ll be longer than that.

Way longer than that. Only until there are close to 100% driverless cars on the road can a person 'safely' take a nap or bother not paying any attention on the road if they are the sole occupant. Other human drivers can still hit you if you are too busy doing other things than paying attention.

I don’t think taking a nap will ever be legal. In order for seatbelts and airbags to work properly you are supposed to be sitting in an upright position, crash tests have shown this. If you’re lying down and get into a crash you’ll just slide right under your seatbelt.
