Before renting a car, make sure you can take it across state lines.
If you rent a car in Vegas and tell them you are going to use it in town only, then drive to CA. Car will die at state line. And rental car place will charge you more.
Is your car leased or owned? Either way, its a 2018 so it has awhile to go in mile usage.
I'd rent a car if that is the charge. Maybe use a travel rewards credit card (if you have one) for the rental and earn points you can later use on a bigger trip.
My winter ski drive is 320 miles per weekend plus local driving. I have AWD and snow tires. My summer weekend drive is 240 miles. I have a bike rack on the receiver hitch I use a lot. I have a wagon and use the cargo area frequently. I’m not renting a car for any of that.
I rent cars for business travel. I don’t want to rack up miles on my car and the depreciation hit is more than the mileage allowance. I’d rent a car for a 500 mile personal trip.
The car loses its value even if it's sitting in the parking lot. That's why I don't take the face value of estimated cost per mile thing.
However, putting 1000 miles on the car will definitely add a little bit more depreciation and maintenance cost. It's just hard to figure out the exact number.
Any new car today will easily go 100k without breathing hard. That is a lot more miles than you will put on it before you trade it in or sell it so what exactly are you saving by leaving it at home?
Renting s vehicle to save a few miles on your vehicle is called false economy....
But now, I'm thinking of downgrading to a Camry to save a little bit money.
How much of a depreciation hit will you take? You might be better off keeping the Avalon.
