It's not related to the 3000 mile oil change at all. It's to get wear metals out of the engine. I did my first oil change at 1200 on my Golf even though the manual doesn't specify a break in change, just normal 10000 intervals. I got the oil analysed. Guess what-- It had very high levels of metals and silicon from manufacturing. Some manufacturers specify a shorter interval, for example Audi says 5000 for the first change on the same engine I have!
Interesting how they thought it was a good idea before but no longer!
Here's the thing... If 10k is good for the first oil change, then the second oil change should be at 15k or 20k.
The equal oil changes for the whole life of the vehicle is a matter of convenience. If VW/Audi said 1000 miles, customers would balk. If they say 5000 miles most people probably forget or at least get annoyed and complain about how often they have to visit the dealer. 10000 miles from day 1 may result in more wear but makes customers happier.
The manual is definitely not written with strictly engineering considerations contrary to popular belief. For example mine swears you can't tow, but VW sells tow hitches for the car in Europe!!
Back in 2014 we had a new Honda CRV. I believe the manual said first oil change at 7500 miles. Brought car to dealer for first service at 3000 miles....dealer told us to save our money, car only needed service at 7500 miles.
People who go by the recommendations of posters on public forums who start their posts with phrases like "I think" and "Supposedly" are pretty much doomed from the start.
I did not know this. I am dong this for my new car. I bet my engine will last 500,000 miles.
I've always done oil changes at 500 miles, 1000 miles, 1500 miles, and then again at 3000 miles then switch to normal intervals after that. I know this is an older philosophy, but it has never let me down!
Dude, how old are you? Did you ever find out how to install a lug nut?
Oil changes are specified in the owner's manual. Don't for a minute think you are smarter than the manufacturer.
Many dealers suggest a half-time initial change mainly because so many customers think it's needed!
