Well old fart, checking the dip stick won't tell you the quality of the oil, and that is equally as important as telling you the quantity of oil in the car.
I don't know about other cars, but my Corvette monitors the quality of the oil as well, and gives me a read out any time I want as to the "life" remaining in the oil, as well as when to change it.
