Same thing was happening to me when I would park waaay out with my new car. I usually chalked it up to general lack of intelligence in the other driver. Now I always go for an end piece instead, which seems to attract less general foolishness.

Can't recall it ever happening to me, ever. I usualy park in a distant area of the parking lot, and it's never happened.

A lot of people want to be passive-aggressive, many times they do it with their vehicles.

I had someone do that to me once who did ding my car , they also had two flat tires with the valve stem cores lying by the wheels when they returned to their car.

This happened many years ago, the car I had had valve stem caps with a built in core remover tool, probably would've done all 4 but it was getting a bit noisy.

By the time average well-adjusted people get to the parking lot, they are alrelady angry about several things a great deal more important than other people's parking space choices, so they probably don't notice.

But if there's spots free next to that car, why park inches from him instead of one space apart, since there are no other cars in that section?

The answer is apparent from some of the responses in this thread. There's a certain kind of driver who has about a 12-year-old, at most, emotional maturity level, and they think it's cool to deliberately mess with people this way.

Another explanation is herd mentality.
