Design and safety features like air bags make these small vehicles probably safer than they were 20-30 years ago, but there's no denying physics. Being in a heavier, taller vehicle in most collisions greatly lessens one's chances of sustaining serious injuries. That is somewhat offset by the handling advantages of a lighter more nimble vehicle less prone to rollovers.

That's why small SUVs and crossover vehicles are the hottest vehicle models at the moment - they're a good compromise. There's higher seating position, more space, they drive like a car with tons of utility and space. I wouldn't own a sub-compact due the amount of freeway driving I do. It's intimidating driving next to a semi and getting blown sideways by the air turbulence!
You get intimidated by semis on the road? Just pass them.

I know exactly what you are talking about! And they are not even large enough for many, since they go out and put lift kits and huge tires to make the trucks even bigger....Lots of overcompensation going on with this imo

No you can't.

You cannot legally buy a car and remove it's emissions equipment.
You cannot legally lift a truck more than 2" in Massachusetts.
You cannot touch anything* between the air filter and the cat on a car in California.
You cannot drive an unsafe car in most states.

You enter an agreement with the state when you plate a car to abide by the rules of the state which means you don't have carte blanche for doing "what you want with a vehicle you purchase with your own money"

We're free to be foolish and wasteful if we choose, that's for sure. Is this a great country or what?
