I think it's one of the few non minivans or full-size SUV's that can seat 8. It's also one of the cheapest ones, probably competes with the Highlander which I see a bunch of as well
Friends just replaced their mini van with a new Pilot. Husband DID NOT want a mini van purely for reasons of....whatever that male anti mini van sentiment is. But they have 2 young kids so, see above. Surprised it seats 8, the new one with the scooped back windows etc. looks much smaller overall

The new one is bigger but has less usable cargo capacity with the swoopy minivan styling. It's weird that Honda has made their truckish vehicles, the Pilot and Ridgeline, more carlike, even though the problem they identified was lack of truckishness
Generation 3 is selling well because they have reduced the size of the box to what it was in Gen 1 back in 2005-2006. Generation 2 (2009 - 2015) started to become Expedition-like, people didn't want that blunderbuss look, and sales slumped. Gen 3 like Gen 1 is more agile and maneuverable. Predict it to be a big seller. This vehicle will easily last you 300,000 miles with proper maintenance.
Not sure why you picked the Explorer when the Pilot is smaller than the wifes Escape. We were comparing her car to a new 2018 Pilot at supper last night. For what it is, it's a sharp little car. The one we were comparing to was silver and loaded. The lady that owned it said she buys one every other year and really likes this one better than the 2016 she had. She had quite a number of issues she claimed in the conservation with the 2016. She is happy and I can see why folks would gravitate to the car. I thought it was a good looking car/suv. Hers looked like this one:

It’s possible that because you’re interested in them, they catch your eye and you think they’re everywhere. To me all SUV’s look alike and I can’t tell any generation apart.
I'm thinking this might be the case too...can't say I've ever noticed this new generation. Now that I'm aware I don't noticce them, I will probably see at least 2 tomorrow.

To be fair, it took me about a year to notice my neighbor has a Pilot. My eye must not be trained to look for that sort of thing.
Although a Pilot is not something I would ever take notice of, I do not think I have seen one on the road for many years. At least not that I noticed. However there are a lot of soccer mom/grocery getter cars around that i pay no attention to.
I think their prevalence may be regional. We do not even have a Honda dealer within 40 minutes from our home. they are pretty rare and spread out, so it is unlikely they sell a ton of them around here.
