Are Toyotas & Honda really as great AND are GM & Chrysler really as horrible as Scotty Kilmer makes them out to be?? (sedan, Japanese)

In 2018, pretty much all cars will go 125,000 miles without stranding anyone at the side of the road. Once a car gets to 8+ years old and that kind of miles, maintenance and driving style matter more than model.
If you drive 10 year old beaters, brand and model matter though how the car was driven and maintained probably matter more.
WHO? I think that just about sums it up. The folks over at Jalopnik don't think much about him. I find it strange though that all of his bios claims he has a masters degree from Illinois but none ever say in what industry like they want you to be dumb enough to assume it's a mechanical engineering degree.
You'll always have the folks that are brand loyal. Some are so blind they think a Yugo is a great ride so it doesn't matter how poor the build quality, there are folks that will always say one brand is the best. Some hate Ford. I was a GM guy at one time. Raced MOPARS. GM hung me out to dry with a 76 Monza that they couldn't keep a head gasket on it longer than 2 weeks. The car was at the dealer more in the first year than I had it.The last time the dealer told me they would not work on it again for any reason. I've had Fords ever since with the exception of one Dodge Dakota that was a POS. Most of my Fords will go well past 100,000 miles and usually with little to no repairs required. But then most cars today will go 100,000 miles with zero issues. Toyota and Honda build quality is a myth. They make decent vehicles but they're no better than anything else on the road. The biggest issue I have with both brands, hope you and yer banker are good friends when it needs repairs. The parts are way past ridiculous in price..... a rebuilt steering box for a Tacoma $4800.00, a muffler $540.00, a battery $320.00....
I can't believe anyone would write that Toyota and Honda are no better than anything else on the road. If you want to ignore all the stats and documentation that's up to you but don't try to tell us they are not there because they exist and the evidence is very clear. I have never noticed their parts to be more expensive, no that is usually a German car. $540 for a muffler? Did you go to the dealer? Walmart sells batteries for any vehicle and they sure aren't $320.

All vehicles have dealer only parts that, no matter who does the work, can only be obtained there. My most recent experience is with a rear bearing for a Subaru. Oh, you can go after market, but they don't fit. Found that out first.
Also specialized tools. That's why many people don't like to work on Volkswagens. The Tacoma battery is $200 at Auto Zone.
Ive listened to many of Scotty Kilmer's car talks and have learned alot from him considering he has been fixing cars for over 40 yrs. But every video is always saying get a Toyota and they are well built and last forever or a Honda, but does acknowledge Honda doesnt have the best transmissions, and that Nissan's arent really all that anymore either. Ive had only GM and Ford and MANY problems as well, typically after 4 yrs is when things start to fall apart.
I know many people swear by Japanese cars only, but are the Toyota, Honda, and Nissan brands really that much better than a GM, Ford or Chrysler product??? Makes it seem like people have almost zero problem once they buy a Honda or Toyota vs a domestic brand.
I've had several Hondas and one Toyota and all have been very good to excellent. I currently own a Jeep Grand Cherokee & Charger Hellcat because I thought they were more what we wanted than any Honda or Toyota and so far, we're totally happy with these 2 American brand cars....but we have some concern about reliability (so far so good).
I wouldn't hesitate going back to Honda and toyota if we have too much trouble with these cars.

Very true about all cars requiring dealer only parts, so clearly Toyota would not be unique regarding a gear box. But that does not apply to mufflers and batteries.
It's also true that if you trade in before they age any car will be reliable, however a Chrysler will not hold the same resale value as a Toyota. And there's a reason for that. While maintenance is important there is little maintenance that can be done to prevent an electrical system or rear strut from failing. You can have the same owner with the exact same maintenance schedule and driving style and the fact is a Toyota will be much more reliable and offer much longer longevity than a Chrysler or Chevy.
Both of my cars are Japanese built and from the early 90s with almost 200K miles. I haven't had any American Cars last that long on the original drivetrain.

I know you can't believe it, but it is true anyways. I have purposely not bought any Toyota or Honda cars. Why? To prove the claims made are false. Every American I have owned has been great, except one (1986 Ford Escort). No, I am not just lucky. Yes, even Dodge cars have been very good. I vowed years ago that I would never buy one. Now on my fifth one and I couldn't be happier. I am not bad mouthing Toyota or Honda. I think they make nice cars. Some may be better, but not all of them.
For midsize trucks and SUVs Toyota and Honda dominate American brands. And you can buy a house for what Chevrolet charges for their new Silverado trucks, it's a shame bc they look great

I've been a carnut for decades and I've never heard of Scotty Kilmer.
.
+1.....
