When a place like that tells me "It is the law!", I simply ask them for the statute number. If it IS a law that they must comply with, they should know exactly what law they are referring to. If they can't quote the actual law, that tells me that it really isn't a LAW, it is merely a damfool Company Policy. That tells me I need to go elsewhere; if they will lie about a legal issue, what else are they likely to do wrong?
That's exactly what they want to avoid you from calling corporate after your oil change and screaming about how your check engine light is on after your oil change.
The general public are pretty ridiculous when it comes to these sort of scams.
OP, talk to the owner/manager and see what he/she tells you. If you get the same story, go somewhere else. Somebody out there will be more than happy to get their fingernails dirty for a few bucks.
This is correct - otherwise everyone would just stop by the auto parts store on their way to get inspected.
Yes but that doesn't really work because after resetting the code, the car has to be driven a certain number of miles before it reads ready to scan for codes again. I had a car with a small issue that caused CEL to be on for years. To skirt it I had to reset the code and then drive enough miles for it to be ready to scan again but not enough for the CEL to come back on.
The post you replied to was referencing post #6, when the conversation was still about oil changes.
Dude seriously? What is your deal with me? Just put me on ignore. My post referencing #6 was that auto parts places generally don't reset CELs, which another poster collaborated, then the discussion turned toward inspections by another poster, which is what my response about that was for. Let it go.
