The Fusion and Edge share platforms and powertrains. A couple examples how individual engine/drive wheel combos compare in fuel ratings.
Fusion 2.0L FWD 21/31 - 25 combined
Edge 2.0L FWD 20/29 - 24 combined.
Fusion 2.0L AWD gets 20/27 - 23 combined.
Edge 2.0L AWD gets... 20/23 - 23 combined.
Fusion 2.7L AWD 17/26 - 20 Combined
Edge 2.7L AWD 17/24 - 20 combined.
They are virtually identical in fuel mileage, and certainly close enough that to most buyers the difference is not going to sway the purchase decision.
This forum has tons of people that just won't accept it, but there are enough CUV's out there now that get basically equivalent fuel mileage to their equivalent sedan counterparts that buyers who used to buy sedans in part for the sake of greater efficiency no longer have to make that compromise.

Seems to me the main reasons for choosing the sedan over the crossover are:
- Up-front price (Usually CUV's are $5K or so more than their sedan platform-mate)
- Handling
- Acceleration (Sedans seem to run about 500lbs lighter than their crossover platform-mate)
Obviously most people are going the CUV route these days. I'm not one of those people, though.
