dealer wants $300 but Mavis has a $80 special for front pads... I feel the 300 is way high, what should i do? doing it myself isn't an option
That $80 special won’t be $80 by the time they’re done. If it was a pad change ONLY yeah. But I guarantee you will need rotors turned or new ones, bearings packed, and they will try to up sell all sorts of services.
Because the either a bait and switch or the price is just a get you in the door where you will need extensive services.
My wife took her car to a dealer for a oil change special. They tried to sell her 1400 dollars worth of needed work. Brakes, rotors , belts, hoses air filter, cabin filter, and a timing belt.
Considering I just checked the brakes and they were at 50%, all hoses were good, filters were less than 6 months old and in Ca the tim8ng belt is not required to be changed to maintain warranty (it’s written in the owners manyal)
So I got on the phone pretty much turned the salesman (hate to call him a service advisor) into bloody meat told my wife to just leave. I did the oil change at home. Took about 20 minutes.
I dont mind paying for work as long as it’s honest needed work.
What's the fine print on the $80 special? Usually that's for just pads (which are marked up from $20 that you'd pay at a parts store). You usually need rotors as well if the pads are junk, and that's where they will get you.
$300-400 per axle is pretty typical at most independent shops. Dealer might be $400-500+ depending on car.
DIY always saves money here, but you said it wasn't an option
Find a buddy with "tools and skill". Decent set of pads is $30-40 parts store. 20 min job per wheel. Case of beer or, for non consumers, a nice home dinner.
DONE.

This is good advice with a stipulation. The beer gets handed over AFTER the job is complete.
Do the special, especially if they guarantee their work.
The problem is they will say the rotors need to be turned or they can’t do the pads. Then ooopsie wonder of wonders your rotors are no longer the minimum allowed thickness so you’ll need new ones.
And the ever popular “ we aren’t legally allowed to let you leave the shop with brakes like that” if you balk at the work.
For th most part these “specials” are nothing more than attempts to upsell you all sorts of additional work.
You really think a shop makes money on the 22.95 oil change special? That’s called a get you in the door. Most people are too afraid to say no on a hard sale. They clam up and “oh ok I guess it needs it go ahead and do it”
Then they come on here and cry about how the shop “overcharged “ them.
