Depends upon what you mean by "effort".

I've seen local Enterprise places call around to get an SUV or whatever particular class of reserved vehicle because customer wanted what he (or she) wanted.

Have also seen same when someone had a reservation for say a minivan, SUV or whatever and that is what is needed for a specific reason. So it really comes down to the counter staff at times.

OTOH inventory sometimes is what it is; especially around peak travel times (major holidays, summer weekends, etc...). If you roll into a rental place at 4PM on Thanksgiving or Christmas eve you very well may (and should expect) to take what you can get and be happy. Ditto for a Friday late afternoon through Saturday in many urban areas during summer months as places struggle to accommodate the "beach/country house" weekend crowd.

Another issue you may have is if the location in question is independent/franchise or part of a larger network. Again have seen National go out of their way to get someone the reserved class vehicle even if it means them going out to an local airport. Sometimes an agreement can be made that said customer will drive whatever they got out to another location and swap for what they wanted (and reserved).

"I know why we have reservations."

"I don't think you do. If you did, I'd have a car."

It’s just like the Chinese restaurant in Chinatown/SF we went to and had to briefly wait to be seated. A pair showed and had made reservations, yeah they were told to go to back of line and we got seated before them as walk ups...

I got to drive every Caddy they current make on Sunday......FOR FREE! Cadillac has a "Truth+Dare" program in certain markets. Ran a CTS-V on a drag strip.....squealing tires through about 70 mph and a ATS-V on a road course. I could have sampled a "Super Cruise" where the Cadillac drives itself but I left early

That sure sounds like a fun time. How were you able to be involved with that?

Hertz has the Ultimate Choice program where you pick your own car. I reserved a Mustang GT last summer and when I arrived in Orlando they offered me the choice of a GT in 3 colors. I told her "whichever one has the least miles!" It was practically new and I really enjoyed it.

Hertz doesn't rent Caddy's, however. I believe National has a similar program and they rent GM products.

Whenever I need to rent a car, they always give me something similar to what I drive. The last time they only had one vehicle left and it was a crossover so they gave it to me for the same rate as a car. One time they gave me a Chrysler Town & Country. I did not want to drive that soccer mom mobile but after driving it for a few days, it grew on me. It was really nice inside.
