Hi
unfortunately my commute back and forth from work will increase substantially over the next 1 yr

was trying to decide what would be the best car to put so many miles on , hoping it would be

1-that would be a small-medium sized sedan ,
2- used no more than 50-70 k miles on it and dependable
3-I can put on 200-300k miles w/o having to deal with frequent breakdowns etc
4-relatively decent milage

some people have suggested the following 4 cars

1-Honda civic
2-Chevy impala
3-toyota camry
4-Victoria crown ( police auction cars)

any suggestions ?

Volvo 240,850,940
Many Volvo owners are very meticulous with maintenance so if you get the service records that would be a plus.
Mercedes E class also
Forget putting 2-300k on a newer car, many expensive electronic problems will make it a money pit!

You can forget the Crown Vic. They haven’t been made since 2011 I think. I had great luck with Kia vehicles.
With your choices I would say Civic Camry Impala in that order

Take a look at Buick's, not many people set out to buy a Buick and they typically sell for far less than their counterparts. You can also find a lot of them lower mileage, one owner about 10 years old. If you can find one with the 3800 you are golden, according to Wikipedia up until 2009. Great MPG as well considering it's 200HP. I get the advertised 28 on hilly roads here in PA cruising along about 85. I only really had one chance to try it on some lengthy flat ground, about 32MPG going about 60/65 over ten miles.

50K is not much unless the car is really old or abused, it's when they start getting over 100K or 15 years you start to have problems with long term maintenance items. The one mechanic I took my car to said he one guy coming in with a LeSabre that had 450K on it but he religiously took care of everything and he most certainly had to replace a lot of stuff, probably multiple times for suspension items etc.

What do you consider a long commute? I have a round trip of 270 miles/day.

I would add the Prius V or standard, used. They run forever and get 50+ mpg.

I would dump the Crown Vic. They weren't that great when new and they haven't built them in a decade.

Camry is a good choice, as is the Corolla.

Toyota Matrix or Pontiac Vibe may be a good fit.

If you live where there is snow I would add either the Subaru Outback or Imprezza.

I also suggest 2012+ Hyundai Accent. That little 1.6 engine has a pretty good reliability record.

I would suggest a used Lexus ES300. Solid car and not expensive to maintain while very comfortable for long commutes. I know someone who uses one to commute 100 miles each way to work in the Bay Area. Has over 280K miles and still runs like a top.

Try and find a late model Ford Crown Vic from a private party. You might be able to snag one with low miles for a decent price. They made excellent police patrol cars, as well as being used as a fleet vehicle. You can rack up 200 to 300 thousand miles on them, no sweat. Gas mileage is pretty good for a full-sized sedan, especially being well equipped.
