Don't get me wrong, the Big 3, especially Ford is beginning to catch up, but T and H had a big head start. This has nothing to do with country of origin; when Hyundai began producing vehicles their reliability was atrocious. In the last 5 years Hyundai is gaining ground rapidly though.
Hyundai makes garbage nowadays. Just google hyundai engine seizing. Major recalls, which solved nothing since it was a design flaw.

They started out terrible. Then in the early to mid 2000s made really good cars. Around 2011, they started to make garbage again with engines throwing a rod bearing and completely failing.

Theta II Engine | Hyundai Problems
That problems were already corrected today since 5 years or so. Now, Hyundai and Kia are more-reliable than Toyota and Honda.

On Insight Central there’s a high mileage club, with many vehicles over 400,000. I’m also aware of a bunch of extremely high mile Priuses. These hybrids seem very reliable if not abused.

If the problem was corrected only 5 years ago, then you can't properly measure long term reliability yet of those newer models against toyota and honda since most models are still low mileage.
