Watching Formula E race in Zurich on tv right now. Are there any USA cities that close off streets for professional auto racing? Any USA cities you could imagine shutting down streets for racing?

They used to do it here in Minneapolis, I remember walking out of a Twins game and watching cars racing through the streets in downtown. Though this was 25+ years ago.

I believe Savannah GA and Pittsburgh PA both host vintage events in city streets and there's talk of an F1 race through the streets of Miami FL as early as the 2019 season.

There's been some discussion of holding an F1 race in Miami, but the proposed street course is horrible in my opinion. Just lots of short left-right-left-right, followed by a long fast straight, a hairpin U-turn, and another long fast straight back to the start.

I do not like street courses. There are rarely any places for passing except on the straights, so the cars are set up for low downforce and low drag, which makes up for sloppy handling in the corners. Whoever qualifies fastest usually ends up winning. The US already has an excellent road course at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas, but until another course is constructed the US should be content with a single grand prix event.

Singapore has an excellent street course, but that's because the city has lots of wide boulevards. Monaco's course is terrible, but will be used forever because it's a traditional event since 1929; they would have to knock down hotels, apartments and casinos if they wanted to improve the course.

Thats what they should do in Puerto Rico to generate tourism! Build a really good road around the whole island with a race in mind when designing it. They could have an Isle of Man type race or a Monaco type grand prix or both!

This from Wikipedia re "Road Racing"

"
Additionally, racing over public streets is making something of a comeback; the most famous race of this sort currently held is the Grand Prix of Long Beach, hosted annually in Long Beach, California. Other famous street circuits in North America include events held in Saint Petersburg, Florida, Montreal, Québec, Detroit, Michigan, and Toronto, Ontario."

We have few places in and around the city designated for that, but not many cities that will close streets for racing.
Houston:

And race tracks:

Houston Motorsports Park | The Palace of Power
etc.
