Under 30 MPH - The speed limit or under
30-45 MPH - The speed limit or up to 5 over
45-60 MPH - Between 5-10 over
60+ MPH - Around 10 over
It really just depends on the road. If it's a two-lane road through a rural area, I'll go anywhere from 10-20 over the speed limit. It it's a main four lane road with plenty of cars and business, I tend to stay around the speed limit.
I TRY not go more than 5 mph over, but truth be told, I'll look down and there i am going 10 over.... even 15.
when younger, i had the worst lead foot in the world. I loved speed. I had motorcycles, raced them, I took racing courses at both Lime Rock and Stafford Speedway in CT.... once even bumped into Paul Newman at Lime Rock, lol. Had i ever had the guts to try to race professionally, I would have been such a happy camper. There were so few women ever even allowed to race professionally back in the day. I wish I had had more gumption. but i was indoctrinated and brainwashed to be a nice young lady and not rock the boat. It wasn't until I was 49 that I first heard that saying, " Well behaved women seldom made history"..... that is so so true..... it was the rebels, the gutsy ones who blazed through history, defying norms, shattering expectations, stretching far beyond what anyone thought a woman could accomplish. Marie Curie, the Bronte sisters, Amelia, Billy Jean King, the UCONN women's basketball teams in the 90's, (loved those women, Jen Rizzotti and Rebecca Lobo lived in my town and so so so gave me the courage to fight my first battle with cancer), Wilma Rudolph, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, well, i could go on and on and on..... these women gave me strength and courage to fight the battles I had to fight, to come back after debilitating illness or challenging life circumstances.
Now older, yeah, my foot will slip into heavy mode, but generally i have learned that faster doesn't always mean better or exciting or even guts..... lasting for the long haul is way better.
Drive the actual speed limit or less in residential areas
Parking lots : I drive slow and cautiously. Pedestrians dart out all the time. It drives me crazy when idiots zoom through the parking lot going so fast.
Locally I'll do about 5 mph over. Highways I'll do 10-15 over the limit tops depending on the posted speed limit. So 60 in a 50, 65 in a 55 etc. Maximum I'll speed is 79 with cruise control set in a 65 and I still get passed as if I'm standing still often. Normally in a 65 zone you won't be bothered going under 80. 80 and abive will get you pulled over almost always.
Most of our freeways (in CA) are 65mph, and this is the general unspoken rule... so I only check myself when the needle hits 80, but usually keep it around 75-77. Any slower than that, and I'll end up with someone's bumper riding mine!!
Those are just my freeway guidelines, though, while I'm a bit more cautious on surface streets. Depends on the specific location, but I try not to exceed 7-10mph over on those.
It seems like practically no one drives within the speed limit. How fast do you drive relative to the speed limit, usually?
Personally, I drive up to 10 mph over the posted speed limit. To me, it seems like speed limits are set too low in most cases. I feel like if I actually drove the speed limit, it would be dangerous to myself and other drivers!
One interesting thing that I learned that many people don't know is that the yellow speed limit signs are "advisory" signs and are not enforceable by law. Only the white signs are enforceable.
I drive just under 10 mph. It seems to get by a police cruiser okay so that's good enough for me to stay out of trouble.
