You know everything goes up steel prices , labor cost,, raw materials, energy cost, medical insurance premiums that the automakers have to pay for their employees, so you can’t just say vehicles are to expensive. Look at new home prices do you think they are worth what the price. Everyone complains about new vehicle cost and that they should stay the same price forever remember also automakers are not going to eat the cost of the the new standards that the government standards regulations. Just like you job you want a raise don’t you and your company will raise their prices to cover your raise.

Not really. I'll use my daily driver as an example.

My 2016 F-150 Lariat SuperCrew had a sticker price of $58,000. A fully loaded F-150 SuperCrew Lariat in 2001 was about $41,000 sticker price.

$41,000 in 2001 is equivalent to $55,563.45 in 2016.

Now, consider that my 2016 truck has about 125 more horsepower than that 2001 model, about 100 ft-lbs more torque, tows 4,000 lbs more, 1,000 lbs higher payload, gets 5 miles to the gallon better fuel economy, is much safer, and that's not even mentioning the hundreds of options this truck has that we hadn't even dreamed about in 2001.

I think that $3,000 is more than justified.

Now, when it comes to used cars that depends. With all the manufacturer rebates and programs out there, you can buy most vehicles cheaper brand new than you can 1 or 2 years old. I really don't know how they manage to sell them or who buys them, maybe there are some super negotiators who come in there and talk them down $5,000-$10,000 off their asking price to make it worthwhile. Then you add in the fact that most banks and credit unions charge you a higher interest rate if your financing a car that has been titled before...

Used car sales are up because those who wanted but couldn’t afford a CUV or SUV are buying the lease and rental returns. Those that can only afford $20,000 choose to buy a used SUV or Crossover rather than a new compact for the same money. New vehicle sales are down overall not because they are unaffordable, but because they last so much longer, people hang on to them longer than ever before. Add to that some are waiting for the self-driving cars that they think are doing soon.

Also, nobody is paying sticker for a truck made by the big 3. You can basically subtract a 1 from the first number on the sticker, and that’s much closer to the price you’ll be paying. There are so many deals and rebates to be had on trucks, it’s no wonder they sell so much better than sedans.

Bottom line.

You can get a new 2018 Toyota RAV4 for $24,000 or a new 2018 Nissan Versa for $12,000.

But many want to keep up with the Jones and get the extra stuff or options on vehicles. Either for safety reasons or just for bragging reasons.

Most people have a difficulty separating needs from wants.

I wish that was the case. A single cab 4x4 diesel long bed LX base model runs 55,000. I need a diesel long bed and 4x4 extended cab at a minimum. A XLT runs 60/64k. Not even looking at Lariat/platinum.
That’s why I’m keeping my trucks. They run well have no issues and do what I need.

What I haven't figured out is who buys from Carmax and alike? Their 3-year old cars with 30K on the clock are barely a few grand less than brand new with no new incentives that come with the new cars.

Sticker price maybe, but nobody pays sticker price. My F-150 was a special order, and I didn't even pay close to sticker price for it, so I certainly wouldn't for something that's been sitting on the lot for months.

2019 (not an '18) F-250 single cab 4x4, XL trim with power locks-windows and backup camera, with the diesel engine for $45,000.

Not a Ford man? Here's a RAM that might tickle your fancy. That one's a great deal, it's a Crew Cab 8' box Tradesman 4x4, but it has power windows-locks, keyless entry, Sirius radio and backup camera for under $45,000. Don't like RAM either? Maybe a bow-tie is more your style? Another Crew Cab 8' box diesel 4x4, this one has the larger touch screen with voice recognition, Onstar, power windows and locks, keyless entry and a sprayed on bedliner. All for under $50,000.

Here's a truck you would like, 2018 F-250 SuperCab with the 8' box, XLT trim (although not loaded), and diesel engine for under $50,000.

Not to mention the higher interest rate that comes along with buying used.

I know Carmax has their own in-house lending arm now, so it might be buyers who can't get qualified through a traditional lender for whatever reason, although Carmax has quite a few high dollar vehicles in their inventory, and I wouldn't think they would want to loan that kind of money to someone high risk.

They also have their own extended warrnty policies. Talking to them for a few minutes and you'll soon realize it's not what you think it is.

I am not sure the OP would consider a truck affordable for "only" $50,000.
