Why do drivers speed when it doesn't really get you to the place faster? (green light, slow lane)

It is the psychology of having an open road in front of you.
I wouldn't recommend trying this, but. Say you are in a car, open freeway or other safe condition (theoretical) and you set the cruise at 100MPH. (Which most any car can do easily nowadays, some rare exceptions. New Camrys are faster than old Ferraris now, they say.) The psychology is... You will end up going faster. Simply because.. you cannot stand the sight of an open road in front of you, and must make it go away as quickly as possible.
In North NJ, people rarely obey the laws of traffic.

Huh?
You have it on cruise control. You're saying cruise control doesn't like an open road?
Some of us LOVE to drive. Not putter.
Some of us do it responsibly.
Some of us do not get road rage.
The generalizations here (particularly from one poster) make me sad for humanity.
Every person that passes you is an a-hole road rager? Ahhh you're that dude doing 50 in the fast lane, aren't ya?
Some of us people passing you will not cut you off, we will not get in your way, and if by some chance we do happen to do something that does interfere with your driving in any way, we will give you that "OMG MAN I AM SO SORRY!" look.

Don't let that "one poster" get to you. They have classic tactics.. Say things so outrageous, as to cause someone reading to get angry. If that happens, then they have won.

There's no such thing as responsible speeding. People who do it think they're better drivers than everyone around them and they're not. Look up some statistics on how much worse accidents are for every 5 miles faster you're going.
As OP was talking about the supermarket and ordinary daily driving, you do know that most accidents happen within a few miles of home, right? What can you possibly gain by getting to the supermarket ahead of the cars in front of you?
Of course it gets you there quicker...why do you think ambulances speed or police, when they need to get somewhere fast...this is pretty simple to understand...if you go faster, you are going to get there faster.

Sure there is...everyones driving skills are different. I see people everyday on the interstate going close to 100mph, weaving in and out to avoid slower drivers.
