I don't think Tesla's issues have much to do with the self driving aspect.

What trouble they are facing are you referring to? They largely have production issues currently, not so much tech.

But the big guys starting to play in their little disruptive field is certainly a big threat.

I'd probably feel safer in a self-driving car than some random driver in an Uber, yeah. Though in their infancy their driving records are already better than humanity's.

Publicly available Teslas aren't even currently self-driving yet.

Nah, I would just send my self driving car to go pick up my kid and get my groceries that I ordered online. No need for me to go along for the ride.
