Police pursuits have become a hot topic. On one hand, what are we supposed to do when someone takes off? Simply let them go ? If we do that, EVERYONE would be fleeing. On the other hand, these pursuits do take place on public streets, with citizens on the same roads, and it can put them in danger.

I am glad they caught that lowlife and hope he fries.

He didn't assault her. He ran her over while she slept.

As a CHP friend told me over BBQ beers long ago, no one outruns Motorola. Especially these days, where you can't fart in public without it being on surveillance. The days of gangsters, rumrunners and the Duke boys gettin' away because they cross the county line are pretty well over.

Just sayin'.

Whats wrong with letting them go and just going after them at a later time, like when they are at home, or out in public somewhere, (not in the car)?

They don't want the person to get all GTA crazy.

But not nearly the collective response time. And locals were forbidden to cross state and sometimes county lines, no matter what, so a mad break for a line was an almost assured escape. (Bonnie and Clyde's last long ride was controlled by staying within a few miles of state lines, for example.)

But now, it's only a minor hurdle when there aren't actually cooperative agreements in place.

Many police departments have no chase policies, and they work just fine. There are all kinds of alternatives. Roadblocks, tire spikes, following the suspect from a distance (air or on the ground) and wait for them to stop. When the police chaise somebody they drive faster and more dangerously. That is a proven fact. The police are escalating the situation when they chase a suspect.
