That crack will only get worse as the weather gets hotter or colder. Them repair kits are for chips, not cracks. Find a windshield from your local junkyard and ask around. Someone knows how to install them and would gladly do it and put some extra cash in their pocket doing it.
A lot of people are saying to replace the glass and obviously that is best but dont be fooled by those low prices. My 2010 Taurus SHO was $568 to replace and my wife's 2013 Camaro was $512 (different companies)
Call around and see what folks will charge you to replace. If it gets much longer it wont be able to be repaired. Most places say that as soon as it gets as long/longer than a dollar it cant be repaired.
Wife's car windshield has a hairline crack due to the passenger wiper blade falling off. It's about 5 inches long. Should I get it fixed by a professional or attempt to do it myself with one of those repair kits?
Check your insurance policy. Most of them have a free repair for windshields that have cracked. I had a truck kick up a small stone, and it started to crack. Kept getting worse. My insurance paid for it, I think it has something to do with it being a hazard or something like that.
It didn't raise my rates, they do not consider it a claim, like a wreck.
2. Stop at one of those instant fix vans that park outside shopping malls and the like. If you have insurance, they usually fix your windshield for free. Not a replacement, they use some sort of epoxy. Even though these are probably minimum wage workers who just graduated from highs school, they have training and hopefully some experience so they can probably do a better job than you will DIY with no experience or training at all. Free is good. I like free.
Why all this discussion about a cracked windshield??
Unless you have incomplete insurance broken glass is covered under "comprehensive" coverage. Call your insurance company to schedule a replacement ,at no out of pocket to you, ASAP.
Fix it yourself?? Really?
Only KY, FL, AZ, MA, NY, and SC have free windshield replacement insurance requirements.
Otherwise it's most likely subject to your comp deductible.
OP here,
I'll go ahead and replace it. Question is should I go to Toyota (it's a Highlander) or some private glass repair shop?
"Safelite repair, Safelite replace". That's just who my insurance handles the replacement through. They recommend replacement for any crack larger than a dollar bill.
