Just googled it...the law was enacted in 1974 and repealed in 1995.
That's 21 years...easily meeting my (personal) definition of a "long time".
You said the states waited a long time to repeal the 55 limits, not Congress. Once allowed to, most states raised the 55 limit right away. Some even went so far as to have certain grade-separated divided highways re-designated as interstates just so they could raise the limit on them.
My ticket was not for speeding, though I do that quite often. My trouble is at the traffic lights, and got ticketed because I saw yellow, while the cop saw red! Last year was at a stopped light in a small Oregon town, guess I turned left in the wrong lane, but only got a warning.
Nope, I'm paranoid about my speed and rightly so. I'm only 17 so my insurance costs are already through the roof and I have a completely clean slate! Lord knows what they'd be like if I had a speeding ticket on my record.
I've had one speeding ticket, given to me in May of 1973 about 20 miles east of Kingman, Arizona. I was doing 103 MPH in a 75 MPH area.
I was told by the state trooper to go directly to the Kingman courthouse, and given a map with directions. I was scared to death.
After waiting about an hour or so, the judge called me into a private room, not a courtroom like I was expecting. He asked me what a fellow with PA plates was doing out in that area, and why was I driving so fast. I explained that I had been recently married, and we were driving out to LA for our honeymoon, and that I only had 12 days to complete the entire trip.
He came outside and took a brief walk around my car with me. I had a fairly new Opel Rallye, with about 10,000 miles on it at the time. We went back into the room, said he wanted to check out my tires to see if they were OK, and then he ripped up the ticket. He told me that he just wanted me to spend the night in Kingman, at a local motel, and we would call it even. Since it was already around 6:00 PM, that seemed fine with me, I had already driven about 800 miles that day, starting from Amarillo, Tx, with a side trip to the Grand Canyon. My wife and I checked in to the local motel, and had a great dinner too!
That was my only speeding ticket in over 600,000 miles of driving (so far).
(age 16)The first day I had my license 113 in a school zone, the thing that really pissed off the cop. He had seen me driving for about a year and a half before that little did he know.
(age19) My second speeding ticket was in Oregon they clocked me from the air going up hill pulling a trailer 85 in a 55. The funny thing when I went to court I was asked how i'd like to pay? I responded cash, other people in court and the judge all started chuckling I still can not figure out why.
(age 34) My third speeding ticket was in my wifes new Suburban 80 in a 55. I had a hard time explaining that one, I usually drive my Corvette never had a ticket in it. My wife is always telling me to slow down I drive to fast, the very first time I drive her rig I get nailed.
I also drive defensively. I look ahead and behind as far as possible for erratic drivers and speeders. I remember once coming to a stop sign and noticed that the driver behind me was looking at their passenger seat and did not see me stopped till I honked my horn and she hit her brakes and just missed me. I do realize that one has to look all around ones vehicle at all times, that is why I have never been involved in an accident.
